Markets witnessed a strong opening on Monday taking cues from Asian peers and rewarding better-than-expected Q2 earnings. 

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex hit fresh record high of 40,434.83, but corrected a bit to hover around 40,390 level. Only 7 of the 30 stocks listed on the index were trading in the red. Vedanta and Tata Steel were the top gainers on the index, up 3 per cent each. On the downside, YES Bank was trading over 4 per cent lower as the top loser.

On the NSE, the broader Nifty50 was trading above 11,900-mark at 11,950. 

Sectorally, indices were trading mixed in the early trade. Nifty IT and Auto indices slipped 0.2 per cent in the trade, while Nifty Metal index gained 2 per cent on positive global cues. 

In the broader market, small-caps were surging ahead. The S&P BSE small-cap index was trading 0.6 per cent higher, while the S&P BSE mid-cap was up 0.37 per cent.
