Equity benchmark indices opened sharply lower on Tuesday morning amid weak global cues. The Sensex is down 222 points and the Nifty shed 58 points at 12,166.

Bharti Infratel, Zee, Coal India and IndusInd Bank are among the top gainers, while losers include UPL, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Tata Steel.

Among sectors, Media and PSU banking indices were trading higher, on the other hand, auto, realty, metal and IT were down.

The most active stocks on the NSE are Reliance Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Bharti Airtel are the most active stocks.

The domestic currency opened lower at 8 paise at 71.18 per dollar against Monday's close of 71.10/$.

Companies set to announce their earnings are Zee Entertainment, ICICI Prudential Life, HDFC AMC, IndiaMART InterMESH, Polycab India, Granules India, Havells India.

Meanwhile, Asian stocks were trading lower after the International Monetary Fund cut its global growth forecasts, primarily due to a sharp slowdown in India and other emerging markets.

Oil prices rose after Libya declared force majeure on two major oilfields following a military blockade and protests escalated in Iraq, raising supply concerns.

Besides, the foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net Rs5.87cr and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth a net Rs1419.85cr, as per provisional data.
