Equity benchmark indices opened in the negative zone after a surge in crude oil prices. Oil prices jumped after the media reports said that the US airstrike killed key Iranian and Iraqi military personnel, raising concerns that escalating Middle East tensions may disrupt oil supplies.
The Sensex dropped 118 points or 0.28% at 41,503, and the Nifty is down 36 points or 0.30% at 12,245. About 864 shares have advanced, 688 shares declined, and 545 shares are unchanged.
The Indian rupee slipped 12 paise at 71.49 per dollar vs. the previous close of 71.37/$.
GAIL, ONGC, TCS and Infratel are among the top gainers, while losers include Asian Paints, Zee, BPCL and Hindalco.
India VIX climbed 5% at 12.03.
Among sectoral indices, except realty and IT, all other sectors are trading lower on the NSE.
The most active stocks on the NSE are RIL, Indiabulls HF, HDFC, Suzlon and ONGC.
