Equity benchmark indices opened in the negative zone amid weak global cues. Tata Steel, M&M, ONGC and IndusInd Bank are among the top draggers on the Sensex pack.
The BSE Sensex is trading 157 points lower at 40,985 while the Nifty50 index fell 48 points at 12,050. Broader markets were mixed at opening with Nifty Midcap down 0.2% and Nifty Smallcap up 0.1%.
UPL, Yes Bank, GAIL, Cipla, and Hero MotoCorp were the top gainers on the Nifty50 index, while Tata Steel, Vedanta, JSW Steel, Tata Motors, and Hindalco led the losses.
India VIX is trading higher by 2.5% at 14.90.
The Nifty auto index fell 1% dragged by M&M, Tata Motors, Eicher and Bharat Forge. From the metal space, the index is also trading lower by 2%. SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW Steel and Vedanta also fell in the range of 2-4%, respectively.
The Indian rupee opened higher at 71.34 per dollar on Monday versus Friday's close of 71.40.
Asian stock markets were trading lower on Monday’s session amid ongoing virus outbreak impact on Chinese manufacturers. The Shanghai Composite down 0.3%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index slipped 0.50%, the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.21%, the Topix index declined 0.47% and South Korea’s Kospi also fell 0.8%.
