The Indian rupee opened higher by 5 paise at 71.34 per dollar vs. Friday's close of 71.40/$.
The rupee declined by 22 paise to settle at 71.40 against the US dollar on Friday amid selling in domestic equities and strengthening of the American currency overseas.
Besides, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs161.93cr, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs178.59cr, as per provisional data available on the NSE showed.
Meanwhile, benchmark indices opened lower as rising concerns about the economic impact from a coronavirus epidemic led to a downturn in global sentiment. The BSE Sensex is trading 157 points lower at 40,985 while the Nifty50 index fell 48 points at 12,050.
